Fields Switches to Ball State: Jennings County's Zach Fields made a last-second move, signing a National Letter of Intent yesterday with Ball State. The 6-10 center originally committed to IUPUI in November. [5/22/2008]
Gym Rats 2010 Win USSSA Crown: The Spiece Gym Rats 2010, formerly the Indiana Sharks, racked up a perfect 6-0 record -- with wins over the Indiana Blue Devils, Northwest Ohio Basketball Club, PAL Elite Black, PAL Elite Red, Spiece Gym Rats (Foust) and Spiece Gym Rats (Jewell) -- to win the USSSA State Chamionship this weekend in Fort Wayne. Coached by Sherron Wilkerson, the Gym Rats' roster boasts many Southern Indiana preps, including A.J. Adams (Jeffersonville), Keegan Clark (Jeffersonville), Michael Howard (Edinburgh), Jordy Martin (New Albany), Steven Mayfield (Henryville), Dylan McDaniel (New Albany) and Ben Raichel (Austin), who join a small contingent of players from both the north and Louisville, Ky. TSI Cruises to Triple Crown Classic Title: Corydon’s Casey Saulman and Browntown’s Taylor Wischmeier each scored 13 points to lift Team Southern Indiana over the Louisville Heat 56-44 in the 16 and under championship at Hoops’ Triple Crown Classic in Louisville. TSI advanced to the title game with a 79-66 win over the Northern Kentucky Magic, and finished the weekend with a 5-0 record. "We've built a strong team chemistry playing in a handful of smaller events this spring," coach Anthony Winchester said. "These guys are representing Southern Indiana well." [5/18/2008]
Bosse's Hein Accepts Vincennes Offer: Evansville Bosse's Jeff Hein was announced as Vincennes' new coach last week, Evansville's FOX 7 News reported. The decision is expected to be ratified by the school board on Monday night. [5/18/2008]
Former Harrison Star Promoted at Vincennes U.: David Ragland, a former Evansville Harrison star, was promoted this week to head coach at Vincennes University, one of the more touted junior college programs in the Midwest. Ragland, who also starred for the University of Southern Indiana, replaces Everick Sullivan, who was named assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky. Brian Davis, noted for his recruiting efforts throughout the area, also was promoted, and will serve as Ragland's top assistant. [5/17/2008]
Rumors Rampant in Jennings County: Administrators are denying that Scott Holdsworth, currently the coach at South Ripley, has been chosen as Jennings County's new boys’ basketball coach. Panther's athletic director Steve Arnholt, who will retire next month, told the Columbus Republic that while Holdsworth had interviewed, no decision has been made. [5/17/2008]
Indiana Elite One Captures May Classic Crown: Batesville’s Colt Ryan netted 18 points and Bloomington South's Jordan Hulls chipped in 13 as Indiana Elite One dropped the Michigan Mustangs 80-63 to win the 17 and under title at the adidas May Classic today in Bloomington. [5/11/2008]
Kuric to Sign With Louisville: After months of speculation, Evansville Memorial's Kyle Kuric will sign Monday with Rick Pitino's University of Louisville program. The 6-foot-5 guard, who averaged 22.4 points per game last season, orally commited to the Cardinals in October. [5/9/2008]
"Hoosiers" Reunion Game Set: The third annual "Hoosiers" Reunion All-Star Classic will take place at Knightstown, the home court of the famed Hickory Huskers, on June 6 at 8:00 p.m. Southern Indiana's stars selected to participate include Edgewood's Garrett Butcher, Batesville's Alex Grimsley, New Albany's Braydon Hobbs, Madison's Logan Jones, Evansville Memorial's Kyle Kuric and Washington's Tyler Zeller, Indiana's 2008 Mr. Basketball. Hulls Chalking Up Scholarship Offers: Bloomington South’s Jordan Hulls is making plenty of noise on the AAU circuit so far this spring. Earlier this week, the 6-foot point guard received scholarship offers from Indiana and Purdue, with previous invitations from Evansville, Ohio, Toledo and Western Michigan. He is also drawing heavy interest from Duke, Stanford and Wake Forest. Hulls, who was named to the all-tournament team at last weekend’s Jayhawk Invitational, is traveling with Indiana Elite One. Team Southern Indiana Nabs Second at Fast Break Festival: After finishing 3-0 in pool play, Team Southern Indiana advanced to the 16 and under championship of the Fast Break Festival in Indianapolis last weekend before falling to Indiana Select 90-79. The Brownstown duo of Taylor Wischmeier and Spencer Allman each scored 18 to pace TSI in the title contest. In the semifinal round, Wischmeier and Corydon's Garrett Ross tossed in 24 and 23 points, respectively, as TSI upended Indiana Elite Red 77-73. In pool play, TSI beat Club Indiana 72-65, Indiana Elite Green Wave 73-63 and the Indy Bulls 83-70. [5/8/2008]
Grimsley Picks Kent State: Alex Grimsley, a 6-foot-6 power forward from Batesville, recently gave a verbal commitment to new coach Geno Ford and his Kent State program. Grimsley, who is the Golden Flashes' first recruit of Ford's tenure, chose Kent State over an offer from Central Michigan. IPFW, IUPUI, Miami (Ohio) and North Florida also showed serious interest. TSI Wins Indiana Open Title: Team Southern Indiana won the 16 and under division championship Sunday at the Indiana Open, a small tournament held at the Bloomington Sportsplex. Led by Corydon’s Garrett Ross (14) and Lanesville’s Bryant Conder (11), Team Southern Indiana edged Southern Extreme 55-51 in the final. Brownstown's Taylor Wischmeier chipped in eight points, and Rock Creek’s Jordan Todd and Brownstown’s Spencer Allman scored six a piece. [4/28/2008]
Spiece 2010 Scores Consolation Prize in Ark.: The Spiece Gym Rats 2010, formerly the Southern Indiana Sharks, finished with a 6-2 record this weekend, winning the consolation bracket at the Real Deal on the Hill in Fayetteville, Ark. The Gym Rats dropped their first two pool play contests, but rallied to win their final round robin game before going on a five game tear to garner the 16 and under division consolation title. Coached by Sherron Wilkerson, the Gym Rats' roster boasts a handful of Southern Indiana's best younger prospects, including A.J. Adams (Jeffersonville), Keegan Clark (Jeffersonville), Michael Howard (Edinburgh), Jordy Martin (New Albany), Steven Mayfield (Henryville), Dylan McDaniel (New Albany) and Ben Raichel (Austin), who join a small contingent of players from both the north and Louisville, Ky. Indiana Elite One Captures JamFest Crown: Indiana Elite One, featuring Batesville's Colt Ryan, Bloomington North's Ray McCallum, Jr. and Bloomington South's Jordan Hulls and David Blackwell, knocked off the JUICE All-Stars (NY) today to win the 17 and under title at the Pittsburgh JamFest. McCallum, a junior-to-be playing up, had a sore hamstring and didn't play in much of the event. [4/20/2008]
