Spencer Allman figuring out college opportunities

Spencer AllmanBrownstown senior Spencer Allman is beginning to think about his basketball future at the next level.

Allman, who is averaging 19.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, has heard mainly from small colleges, including Ancilla, Anderson, Franklin, IU South Bend, IU Southeast, Olney Central, Southern Indiana, and Trine, he reports.

“I went on a visit to IU East last weekend, and I’m going back down to IU Southeast this coming week,” said Allman, who expects to make a college decision at the conclusion of the high school season.

Jocelyn Mousty pulls trigger for Ball State

Jocelyn MoustyEastern Pekin standout Jocelyn Mousty made her college choice earlier today, choosing to stay in-state and give a verbal commitment to Ball State, Lady Musketeers’ coach Mike McBride told HoosierHillsHoops.com.

Mousty, a junior, selected the Cardinals over scholarship offers from Bradley, Evansville and Miami (Ohio). She also received interest from St. Louis.

Corydon’s Dunaway entertaining small-college interest

Corydon senior Brandon Dunaway was recently a guest at a Bellarmine game and is hearing from a handful of small-college program in the Midwest, his family reports.

Dunaway currently has scholarship offers from NAIA schools IU East and Purdue-Calumet.

He is also hearing on a regular basis from West Liberty and Southern Indiana, which, like Bellarmine, are recognized as elite NCAA Division II programs.

Others interested at this time include Goshen, IU Southeast and Oakland City.

New Albany’s Chris Whitehead scores first scholarship offer

Chris WhiteheadNew Albany senior Chris Whitehead has landed his first college basketball scholarship offer, HoosierHillsHoops.com has learned.

Southern Indiana, a top-level NCAA Division II program in Evansville, made an official offer earlier this week to the point guard.

Whitehead, who returned to the basketball court in early January after suffering a broken collar bone during New Albany’s last football game of the season, is also hearing from a variety of other colleges, including a handful of NCAA Division I institutions.

New Albany’s Hale nets 65-footer in prep school tourney

Donnie HaleDonnie Hale, a New Albany 2010 graduate and Purdue recruit, swished a 65-foot shot at the buzzer to force overtime and ultimately push his Bridgton Academy (Maine) prep team to an 87-80 victory over Phelps Academy (Pa.) last Friday in the first-round of the Pride’s Corner Founders’ Tournament in Oakdale, Conn.

Hale also led Bridgton in the scoring column, finishing with 18 points.

“(Hale’s) shot was incredible,” Bridgton coach Whit Lesure said. “You could see Donnie line it up and shoot it like he was going to make it. My hat off to him for the mental toughness to play in the final second.

St. Thomas More School, the tournament host, got past Bridgton 80-62 Saturday to capture the championship.

New Albany’s Hobbs surpasses 1,000-point mark at Bellarmine

Bellarmine junior Braydon Hobbs, a New Albany graduate who in high school was recognized as a top prospect in the graduating Class of 2008, had 11 points, eight rebounds and two steals and surpassed the 1,000-point mark of his college career with 10:53 remaining in the first half of play, helping the host Knights beat conference rival Northern Kentucky 85-74 Thursday night.

Jeremy Kendle, a former Jeffersonville standout, paced the Knights with 22 points, and Providence graduate Justin Benedetti added 12.
