Sean East of John A. Logan has been named the 2021-22 National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Year. East is a graduate of New Albany High School.

What a run it’s been for Providence. The Pioneers’ run to the program’s first semistate championship couldn’t have gone more swimmingly.

Providence (20-6) dominated its sectional, came through with an upset of No. 5 Linton-Stockton and an impressive 44-37 victory over Forest Park for Providence’s fourth regional title in the last 16 years. Then came a 41-33 victory over No. 9 Eastern Hancock and a spot in the state championship for the first time.

In the last two weeks, Providence has beaten three historically siginficant opponents — Southwestern (three sectional titles in the last four years), Linton-Stockton (2013 and 2019 state finalists) and Forest Park (2005 and 2006 state champions and winners of 11 sectional championship in the last 19 years) — to make its way to its third semistate in program history.

Providence upset fifth-ranked Linton-Stockton then dominated the second half of its regional championship game against Forest Park to claim the program’s fourth regional title and the Hoosier Hills Hoops Boys’ Team of the Week honor.
