Grenadiers upset Alice Lloyd 82-70 on the road

February 3, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

PIPPA PASSES, Ky. — A hot IU Southeast team went to Kentucky and handed Alice Lloyd its second loss of the season and its first in the River States Conference.

The Grenadiers (11-14, 8-5 RSC) won for the fifth straight time and the seventh time in their last eight games, 82-70. They’ve also won four of their last five games away from New Albany.

After leading 34-31 at the half, IU Southeast pulled away in the second half against the Eagles, whose only previous loss was in double overtime against Asbury.

IUS had five players score in double figures, led by junior guard Anthony Wales Jr. (Louisville/Valley), who finished with 20 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals in the victory. Junior guard Ahmad Price (Louisville/Valley) had 16, while senior guard Jared Osborne (Mt. Washington, Ky./Bullitt East) and junior guard Glenn Hill Jr. (Louisville/Southern) scored 15 apiece. Sophomore guard Jathan Ritter (Bedford/BNL) scored all 10 of IUS’s bench points.

Alice Lloyd (20-2, 11-1 RSC) got a game-high 21 points from junior forward Will Philpot.

IU Southeast will go for its sixth straight win Saturday when its hosts Brescia (6-16, 4-9) at 1 p.m.

Jacobi, Rockets win ninth straight, 86-66 over Eastern Michigan

February 2, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

YPSILANTI, Mich.Kooper Jacobi and the Toledo Rockets won for the ninth straight time Tuesday, going on the road and knocking off Eastern Michigan 86-66 at the Convocation Center.

The Rockets are now 18-4 overall and 10-1 in the Mid-American Conference, a full game ahead of second-place Ohio (17-3, 8-1).

Jacobi, a freshman who led Silver Creek to a pair of state championships, wasn’t much of a factor in his 13 minutes Tuesday. In fact, Toledo got just three points from its bench in the win. He went 0 for 3 from the field and finished with two rebounds. However, four Rockets scored in double figures, led by junior forward JT Shumate’s 24 and sophomore guard Ryan Rollins’ 19. Rollins also had seven rebounds and two assists.

The Rockets and Eagles were tied at 16 because Toledo went on a 29-19 run the rest of the half to take a 45-35 halftime lead. The second half was all Rockets. They led by as many as 24 at 74-50 with 6:54 remaining.

Freshman guard Noah Farrakhan paced the Eagles with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Toledo visits Indiana this weekend when it goes to Muncie face Ball State. The Cardinals are 10-10 after winning their last three games. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN Plus.

WEDNESDAY’S GIRLS’ SECTIONAL GAMES | Dragons begin state title defense vs. Scottsburg

February 2, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

For the first time ever, Silver Creek will defend a state championship when the Dragons’ postseason begins Wednesday with a first-round matchup with Scottsburg in the Hoosier Hills Hoops Girls’ Game of the Night at the Class 3A North Harrison Sectional.

Silver Creek begins its defense following the first sectional quarterfinal between North Harrison (9-12) vs. Madison (11-8).

The Dragons finished the regular season 20-2 and ranked fourth in Class 3A. They won their second straight Mid-Southern Conference title, they outscored their opponents by 376 points and had winning streaks of 12 and eight during the season.

“Really proud of the regular season,” Silver Creek coach Scott Schoen said, “but that’s finished. We are like everyone else, fighting to stay alive every game.”

Silver Creek beat Scottsburg (11-11) 72-50 on Dec. 14, but the Warriorettes had a resurgent season and appears to be a future sectional title contender.

“Young, talented team,” Schoen said of the Scottsburg. “They’re scary because they shoot the ball so well. No lead is too big because of the way they shoot the ball.”

With a win, the Dragons will face the winner of the first semifinal. They beat North Harrison 72-44 on Nov. 24 and Madison 76-43 on Jan. 11.

“This game is the most important game of the season,” Schoen said. “Our goal is to get to Friday, and to get to Friday, we have to take care of business on Wednesday.”

Corydon Central (20-2) picked up its 20th win of the season Tuesday, pulling away late from Charlestown for a 52-39 victory. The Panthers will face 3A power Salem (11-9) in Friday’s first semifinal.

“Our sectional is the toughest in Southern Indiana,” Schoen said. “Each night is a nightmare. Absolutely no cakewalk for any team. Hopefully we continue to defend and rebound at a high level, and when the smoke settles we are cutting down nets. Bt it’s going to be a war.”

WEDNESDAY’S BOYS’ GAMES | Highlanders can clinch HHC title at Bedford

February 2, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

Floyd Central has made a joke of the Hoosier Hills Conference race.

In a 7-team conference in which every team plays just six league games, the 12-2 Highlanders have a 2-game lead in the loss column on every team except New Albany and the Bulldogs have only played two games (compared to four for Floyd).

But the 12th-ranked Highlanders haven’t clinched anything yet. A win Wednesday evening against Bedford North Lawrence (6-6, 1-2 HHC) in the Hoosier Hills Hoops Game of the Night would clinch at least a tie for the conference championship. A Floyd win and a New Albany loss at Jennings County would give Floyd the title outright.

The Highlanders have won the HHC championship three of the last four years.

“Last year Bedford had a lead on us halfway through the third quarter. The fourth quarter just got away from them,” Floyd coach Todd Sturgeon recalled. “We struggled to defend them. Their size isn’t great, but they do a good job defensively. They’re extremely patient own offense and seem to slow it down against us even more. It’s going to be a challenge on their home floor.”

The game has been moved up to 6:30 p.m. due to impending winter weather. It’s a varsity-only contest against a Bedford team that started the season 1-4 but has since won five of its seven games.

If Floyd failed to clinch at BNL, it will get another chance against Columbus East on Feb. 23. The Olympians are currently 2-12 and winless in league play.

• News & notes: This is Rock Creek’s first home game since a 67-40 win over Cannelton on Dec. 11. That’s almost two whole months without a game in front of their home crowd. The Lions are 2-1 at home this season.
• John Harrell prediction: Jeffersonville 59, Rock Creek 52.
• Sagarin projection: Jeff by 2.
• Outlook: There’s already reason for concern at Jeff. A loss to a Class A team would certainly add to it.
• Greg’s pick: Jeffersonville 56, Rock Creek 45.

Bulldogs, Red Devils eliminated in opening round at Jeff

February 2, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

New Albany and Jeffersonville both suffered season-ending losses Tuesday in the opening round of the Class 4A Jeffersonville Sectional, leaving Floyd Central as the only local team left in the field.

The Highlanders (9-13) will face third-ranked Bedford North Lawrence (21-2) in Friday’s second semifinal after BNL came from behind to beat Jeffersonville 51-42 on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, Seymour (11-10) handed New Albany (5-19) its 11th straight defeat.

The Owls will face Jennings County (16-6) in the first semifinal Friday, weather pending. During the regular season, Jennings beat the Owls 70-42 and Bedford beat Floyd Central 62-28 on Jan. 15.

JEFFERSONVILLE-BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE
The host Red Devils stunned BNL by leading the Stars 38-35 early in the fourth quarter. Jeff led by as many as seven points — at 35-28 — with 3:50 left in the third quarter, but the Stars outscored the Devils 23-7 the rest of the way.

The teams were tied at 16 after one quarter and Jeff took a 29-23 halftime lead behind seven points from sophomore La’Kyra Johnson and six apiece from junior Sophia Reese, junior Cadence Singleton and senior Navaeh Bates in the first 16 minutes.

Jeff, which lost to the Stars 53-31 on Nov. 20, then outscored BNL 8-5 in the first 4 minutes and 10 seconds of the third quarter for its largest lead. The score was tied at 35 at the end of the third quarter and a 3-pointer from junior Brooklyn Carter gave the Red Devils a 38-35 advantage after the first possession of the fourth quarter.

“They came out to compete. They came out feeling like they could win that game,” Jeff head coach Missy Voyles said of her team. “I thought they played a really good game.”

Bedford sophomore Madisyn Bailey — the daughter of former BNL star Damon Bailey’s cousin — gave the Stars the lead for good with a layup with 6:30 remaining. A 3-pointer by Carlee Kern — the Stars’ only starting senior — gave BNL its largest lead at 42-38.

Bedford pushed the lead to 47-38 with just over 3 minutes left, but Jeff cut the margin to four and Reese missed a late layup that could’ve gotten the Devils within two.

“I felt like we tried to force a few things and quit being as aggressive in the third quarter on offense,” Voyles said. “We got a little timid and weren’t being as patient (in the second half).”

The Stars were just 11 for 25 from the line but made enough down the stretch to hold off Jeff, which finishes its season at 10-8. BNL went just 17 for 40 from the field and 6 for 17 from behind the 3-point arc.

Junior Karsyn Norman (14), sophomore Chloe Spreen (13) and junior Mallory Pride (12) combined for 39 of the Stars’ 51 points.

Jeff’s balanced attack was led by sophomore Elle Marble with 10 points. Johnson added nine and Singleton eight for the Red Devils, who scored just 13 points after halftime.

“I’ve got some mixed feelings about (the loss),” Voyles said. “I mean, I’m proud of the way they played. I thought they played some of the best basketball I’ve seen them play in two years, so that’s a huge step.”

NEW ALBANY-SEYMOUR
New Albany trailed Seymour 15-13 at the end of the first quarter, but the Owls scored the first 11 points of the second quarter. Thanks to three 3-pointers from junior Kaylee DeMuth, the Bulldogs crept to within eight at 54-46 with 3:24 left, but Seymour the Owls clinched their second win over New Albany in a 5-day period.

Seniors Maleea Roland and Taylor Treat, who were New Albany’s leading scorers all season, finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively. DeMuth had 11.

“We had a great group of girls, a great group of seniors,” New Albany’s second-year coach Shelby Gliebe said. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t get some wins when we were in games. Tonight, unfortunately, we couldn’t get our offense and defense going at the same time.”

Junior Brooke Trinkle (17), senior Gracie Schrader (15), sophomore Journee Brown (10) and sophomore Kendall Sterling (8) had 50 of the Owls’ 59 points.

“They were ready to play and it didn’t seem like we were,” Gliebe said.

TUESDAY’S GIRLS’ SECTIONAL GAMES | Pirates, Panthers battle on postseason’s opening night

February 1, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

It’s hard to imagine a much better game on opening night of the postseason.

Charlestown enters the game 17-5 and with seven wins in a row. Corydon is 19-2 and has won seven straight.

Corydon beat the Pirates 61-52 in overtime on Dec. 21. Charlestown-Cordyon is the lone game at the Class 3A North Harrison Sectional on Tuesday night and is the Hoosier Hills Hoops Girls’ Game of the Night.

Defending state champion Silver Creek (20-2) went 6-0 against the sectional field and is the clear favorite, but Charlestown and Corydon have to believe they’re right there with the Dragons. Salem (11-11), which could also be a factor in the sectional, gets the winner of Tuesday’s contest in Friday’s semifinal round.

“I’m not sure there’s an easy draw in this sectional,” Pirates’ boss Scott Matthews said. “Corydon is sitting there 19-2 and Salem still really good. They’ve been a state contender the last three or four years. And Silver Creek coming out of the other side. They’re state champions and not a whole lot different, it seems like. Madison’s good and Scottsburg’s capable as well.”

On Wednesday, North Harrison (9-12) will face Madison (11-8) and Scottsburg (11-11) will face the Class 3A No. 4 Dragons (20-2) in the two other quarterfinal matchups. Salem was the lone team to draw a bye into Friday’s semifinals.
