Hatton’s double-double not enough to help Tribe hang on against James Madison

January 16, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.Langdon Hatton and the William & Mary Tribe led 35-16 Saturday at home against James Madison, but the Dukes outscored them 45-35 in the second half and 15-11 in overtime to leave Kaplan Arena with a 95-91 conference victory.

Both teams had won their last two and the Tribe looked like they were on their way to a third straight win, but the trio of Justin Amadi, Vado Morse and Charles Faldon was too much for William & Mary.

Amandi, a freshman forward who was averaging 8.5 points coming in, finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds and three steals to lead James Madison, which has won three straight and is 11-3 overall. Morse added 22 and Falden 21 in the victory. All three played 40-plus minutes.

Hatton, a freshman from Georgetown, helped the William & Mary bench outscore the Dukes’ 47-12. The former North Harrison star had a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds and blocked two shots. Hatton was 4 for 6 from the field and 5 of 9 at the foul line. He also had seven offensive rebounds.

Teammate and fellow reserve Yuri Covington scored 29 points in 39 minutes to lead the Tribe.

The Tribe, who are now 3-13 overall and 2-1 in the Colonial, host Towson on Monday at 7 p.m. The Tigers have won three straight, including a 59-54 win at Elon on Saturday, and at 3-1, trail only UNC Wilimington (8-5, 2-0) in the CAA standings.

SATURDAY’S BOYS’ GAMES | Pioneers to face Jeffersonville, former coach

January 15, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

Through 11 games, third-year Providence coach Ryan Miller likes what his team has accomplished.

The Pioneers are 8-3, having won four of their last five and their only losses have come against strong competition. After early wins over Tell City, Austin, Borden and Lanesville, the Pioneers earned a big 64-59 win over Evansville Memorial before finishing runner-up at the Silver Creek Holiday Tournament.

Then last week, Providence beat Southwestern and Clarksville — arguably the two team challenges to the Pioneers in the sectional in March — last week.

But the Pioneers only played one 4A team and that was a 55-43 loss at Floyd Central. Providence will also play New Albany (5-5) on Feb. 11. Games against the local big programs will help make his team better, Miller said.

“We get a great opportunity to improve through facing top-tier competition,” Miller said. “Most area coaches would’ve said coming into the season that Jeff may be the most talented and athletic team in the area. I would certainly agree with that.”

Jeffersonville enters Saturday’s contest at Johnson Arena at just 2-6. The defending sectional champion Red Devils were expected to be the area’s top team, if not one of the state’s best. But Jeff has dealt with injuries, Covid postponements and cancelations, an ill coach and snow days keeping them from practice after all the sick and injured returned.

“Their record is deceptive thus far,” Miller said. “They have one of the toughest schedules around and have been playing shorthanded, mossing top players for the early part of the season. Now they have everyone back this weekend for the first time, I believe. Jeffersonville can become a top-level team in the state with their tremendous talent and their coaching staff now able to start putting all their pieces together. They are going to be a very dangerous team moving forward and for the remainder of the season. We have several strong opponents on our schedule, but we know playing at Jeffersonville with their full varsity roster now intact, will undoubtedly be one of the most challenging games of the season.”

Andrew Grantz coached at Providence from 2015-2017, leading the Pioneers to the program’s third-ever regional championship in 2016. He likes what Miller has done to continue Providence’s recent winning tradition that was started by Lou Lefevre, who’s now at North Harrison.

“Coach Miller does a great job. He’s got a great culture going there,” Grantz said of his successor. “They’re unselfish and they play with a lot of pride. Having coached at Providence and coached against Providence, those games are difficult. Providence is going to try to play their style of basketball and control the game as much as possible.”

Grantz’s return to where he played and coached is an interesting side note. Grantz’s focus right now is getting his Devils back on track to a winning season. They were beaten 58-34 at Floyd Central on Saturday. Miller says the Pioneers are expecting the Red Devils everyone expected to be a postseason contender before the season.

“We know that they are both good teams who will continue to improve with some key new additions joining each of their programs in the middle of the season, so we must be motivated to improve ourselves each and every week,” Miller said.

Miller wanted to add that the entire Providence family was excited to hear that Coach Grantz and his wife, Jenna, welcomed their second child — a son, Garrison Grantz — last weekend.

SATURDAY’S GIRLS’ GAMES | Red Devils go to Salem for first game in 32 days

January 15, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

Like the Jeffersonville boys’ team, the Red Devils girls missed a huge chunk of the season due to the program’s response to a Covid outbreak.

Their last game was a 42-28 loss to Charlestown on Dec. 14. On Saturday, Jeff (7-6) return to action at Salem (9-6) in the Hoosier Hills Hoops Game of the Week.

Salem, which beat the Red Devils 86-38 a year ago, have become a state powerhouse over the past half-decade, but the Lions have lost six times in a season for the first time since 2016-17 when they were 14-11.

The other two local Hoosier Hills Conference teams take on HHC giants Saturday when New Albany (5-13) goes to Columbus to face 14th-ranked East (14-3) and Floyd Central (7-10) goes to Bedford to face the No. 2 Stars.

Class A No. 1 Lanesville (19-1) will put its 15-game winning streak on the line against a good Eastern (10-8) team and Class 3A No. 4 Silver Creek (17-1) goes to Austin (6-9). The Dragons have won five in a row.

Corydon Central (14-2) will look for its 11th win in its last 12 games when it goes to Madison (10-7) to face a Cubs team that has lost two straight following a 6-game winning streak.
