COLORADO SPRINGSHunter Maldonado went coast to coast and hit a layup at the buzzer to give Wyoming a 63-61 Mountain West Conference victory over Air Force on Friday at Clune Arena.

Maldonado scored 31 points and needed every one of them as Jake Heidbreder and the Air Force Falcons gave the 16-3 Cowboys everything they could handle. Senior guard A.J. Walker led the Falcons with 18 points, but it was Heidbreder who nearly led the upset. The former Floyd Central star finished with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists as Air Force lost for the fifth time in their last seven games.

Heidbreder went 5 for 7 from the field, made his only 3-point attempt and all three of his free throw attempts for the Falcons, who are now 10-9 overall and 3-5 in the Mountain West.

Wyoming is now 5-1 in the Mountain West after winning of the seventh time in their last eight games. Maldonado, a senior guard, went 13 of 19 from the free throw line in the win.

Heidbreder and his Air Force teammates go to Utah State on Tuesday for a 9 p.m. tip. The Utes are just 11-9 but are coming off an upset of San Diego State on Wednesday. Tuesday’s game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
