FRIDAY’S BOYS’ GAMES | Musketeers look to continue historic start against defending champs

January 7, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

Friday’s Hoosier Hills Hoops Game of the Night is a tale of two programs. Silver Creek is defending a state championship for the third straight year, while Eastern is off to its best start in a long, long time.

The Dragons are 6-5 overall and 1-1 in Mid-Southern Conference play. The Musketeers enter at 9-1 — its best start in the 28 years JohnHarrell.net has recorded full season results — and with an 8-game winning streak.

The MSC kings might be vulnerable, opening up opportunities to the league’s up-and-coming programs.

“(Silver Creek coach Brandon Hoffman) and his program have proven they know how to win at the highest levels” second-year Eastern coach Chandler Prible said. “They have a very talented guard in Branden Northern. They are a very tough conference opponent that we will have to play very well against to beat.”

Eastern has dominated nine of its 10 opponents this season, winning by an average margin of 20.2 points per game. They’re beating teams by nearly 22 points per game during their 8-game winning streak.

“We have a lot of respect for Eastern,” Hoffman said. “Coach Prible has done a great job and his players play hard, execute, and expect to win. We will have to play well on both ends of the floor to come out successful.”

This game isn’t only important in the MSC standings, it’s big in other ways for both teams. A win over the defending state champs would be another milestone in an already historical start for Eastern.

Eastern hasn’t beaten Silver Creek since 2013. The Musketeers haven’t beaten Creek at home since 2010.

“This game is important to our guys to show we can compete with one of the more talented 3A schools in our conference,” Prible said.

On the other side, the Dragons look to build on their fifth straight Silver Creek Holiday Tournament championship and their 71-59 win over Providence last week.

“I think our team is making strides and playing well coming off last week’s holiday tourney championship and (we) expect our momentum to continue,” Hoffman said.

FRIDAY’S GIRLS GAMES | Pioneers, Generals prepared for town championship

January 7, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

Clarksville and Providence don’t have a lot of wins to show for their efforts in 2021-22.

But, of course, in high school sports, winning isn’t everything. The two school based in Clarksville have just six wins this season in 30 games, but both coaches’ love their kids attitude and effort heading into Friday’s Hoosier Hills Hoops Girls’ Game of the Night.

Clarksville is 3-13 and is averaging just 27 points per game, but Generals head coach Amanda Carmichael has like the growth in her young team this season.

“If I had to pick one thing to spotlight about our entire team, it would be our culture,” second-year Clarksville head coach Amanda Carmichael said. “ I have been so proud of this group and how they have developed this year, not only as basketball players but just as all around great representatives of Clarksville High School. We lost such a huge group last year when we lost our seniors and we have started to develop a new identity, while incorporating several freshman into key varsity roles for us. While it hasn’t always shown up on the scoreboard, I can’t say enough about how this group has put in the time to get better.”

Carmichael says she likes the chemistry of her team, which most recently won at Cannelton 50-37 before a 36-18 loss at the hands of Perry Central, as well as its toughness.

“They are so unselfish and committed to the team and are truly a joy to coach,” she said. “We hit a stretch where we faced quite a bit of adversity through December, but I thought we did a really great job of bouncing back and having a good week last week against Cannelton and Perry Central.”

Fourteen-year veteran head coach Brad Burden also likes his team’s makeup in spite of the win-loss record.

“This has been a tough year from a wins and loss standpoint for our team,” Burden said. “However, I am super proud of how this group has handled everything from off season departures to injuries. They are a super fun group to coach and work very hard.”

No matter what the teams’ records, winning the town championship is always a goal for both rivals. Providence has dominated the series, winning 27 straight in the series at one point, but the Generals won last year’s postseason game between the teams.

“This is the town championship, so it means a lot to the program,” Burden said. “The players are eager to keep the town championship trophy and avenge the loss from last year.”

Burden wanted to be sure to thank the sponsors of the contest.

“We thank the sponsors of the game, our wonderful first responders of Clarksville Fire and Police, who do an amazing job keeping this community safe,” he said.

BOYS’ TEAM OF THE WEEK | Panthers win three straight to claim Perry-Spencer title

January 4, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

The season started a little slow for Corydon Central. The Panthers were 2-5 without their full lineup.

Following a 3-game losing streak, Corydon beat up three opponents last week to win the Perry-Spencer Holiday Tournament and earn the Hoosier Hills Hoops Team of the Week honor.

The Panthers beat Perry Central, Crawford County and Heritage Hills by a combined 48 points.

“This was some of the best basketball we have seen in years at Corydon Central,” third-year Panther coach Joseph Hinton said. “It was truly a team effort. Everyone did their job and they did what needed to be done in order to come out successful.”

The Panthers started the tournament with a 64-38 on Tuesday. Later that day, they knocked off Crawford County 61-47. The following night, Corydon (5-5) defeated Heritage Hills (5-4) 65-57 to claim the title.

The Panthers shot 51.5 percent ion the tournament, including 17 of their 45 3-point attempts (37.8 percent) and averaged 19.3 assists per game last week. They shot 54.5 percent in the championship game with 20 assists on 24 baskets. They also had just four turnovers.

“We shared the ball without discrepancy,” Hinton said. “Our defensive effort was there at all times and our decision making was at a very high level. Besides the first game, we didn’t turn the ball over much at all. We knew we were undersized and we will always be that way. In order to get extra possessions, we had to do it on the defensive end and we had to take our opportunities on the offensive side of the ball.”

Junior Anthony Martin led the Panthers at 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.7 assists in the tournament. Junior Tyler Fessel contributed 11.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Fessell had 15 points and Martin 10 in the title game.

“Everyone stepped up during this tournament and I was extremely proud of the guys and effort I saw out there on the court,” Hinton said. “No matter what happened, our guys were focused and they stayed on task. In the end, they were out there having the time of their lives, playing a game they truly love with the teammates they would lay it all on the line for. It makes you proud to be a Panther.”
